Police respond to welfare check; turns into officer-involved shooting

Policearrest

Columbus Police Chief Charles Sherer is praising his department and area law enforcement after a response to a welfare check on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at Carriage House Estates resulted in an officer-involved shooting.

Preliminary information shows at about 4:02 p.m. Friday, CPD officers responded to a report of threats being made at the mobile home within the city of Columbus. During investigation of the matter, officers were trying to determine the welfare of a subject and a child, according to Sherer.

While attempting to contact the subject, CPD officers said the subject came out of a residence armed and an officer-involved shooting took place. The suspect was given first aid by officers at the scene until the Columbus Fire Department arrived to transport the subject to Columbus Community Hospital. He was later transferred to Bryan Health West Campus in Lincoln with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Sherer said the matter is still under investigation, noting Nebraska State Patrol was contacted to conduct the shooting investigation.

Members of the Platte County Sheriff's Office assisted in the initial investigation and securing the scene until more units from the Columbus Police Department were able to be called in for duty.

More information is not available at this time.
