The Columbus Police Department has arrested a suspect following an officer-involved shooting that took place on Oct. 20, 2023.
The suspect, 32-year-old Caleb J. Urban, has been arrested on the charges of attempted first-degree assault on an officer (a Class II felony), terroristic threats (a Class IIIA felony), child abuse (a Class II felony) and use of a weapon to commit a felony (Class I misdemeanor), according to Columbus Police Capt. Doug Molczyk.
About 4:02 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, Columbus Police Department officers responded to a report of threats being made at a mobile home in Carriage House Estates within the city of Columbus. During investigation of the matter, officers were trying to determine the welfare of a subject and a child.
While attempting to contact the subject, Molczyk said Urban came out of a residence armed and an office-involved shooting took place.
The suspect was given first aid by officers at the scene until Columbus Fire Department officials arrived to transport the subject to Columbus Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Molczyk. Urban was subsequently transported by air to Bryan West in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he had surgery on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023.
On Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023, Caleb J. Urban was released from the hospital and taken into police custody.
The Nebraska State Patrol was contacted to conduct the shooting investigation. Members of the Platte County Sheriff's Office assisted in the initial investigation and securing the scene until more units from the Columbus Police Department were able to be called in for duty.
“The investigation is still ongoing and this is all the information that will be released at this time,” Molczyk said.
