Snow Emergency to end in Columbus, but more winter weather looms ahead

SnowER (1)

The good news is the Snow Emergency declared in Columbus earlier this week is coming to an end tonight. But, the area’s not exactly out of the woods yet when it comes to winter weather.

Public Works Director Chuck Sliva announced on the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, that the Snow Emergency will end at midnight, the start of Thursday, Jan. 11.

When the mayor or public works director declares a snow emergency, it simply means no vehicles may be parked on streets where you see emergency route signs. These routes are posted on the following page. If necessary, the snow emergency may be extended to prohibit or restrict parking on arterial and residential streets. Typically, a Snow Emergency is based on wind, ice and snowfall forecast of 8 inches or more.

Columbus and much of the surrounding area was hammered with snow throughout Monday and into Tuesday, with reports of up to 13-14 inches accumulated. That all prompted local school and business closures, as well as kept the City Street Department busy plowing the roads over the last several days and nights.

“Snow cleanup efforts will continue throughout the city the rest of the week, so please give crews room when working in your areas,” Sliva said.

Despite the Snow Emergency ending in Columbus, the National Weather Service as of 9:30 a.m. Jan. 10 is predicting more hazardous weather for Columbus and the surrounding areas.
